Fortalecimiento de la resiliencia comunitaria ante los riesgos de inundaciones mediante la adaptación basada en los ecosistemas en Thiès, Senegal
Información del proyecto
El proyecto “Strengthening Community Resilience to Flood Risks through Ecosystem-Based Approaches in Thiès“ addresses the urgent need to enhance flood resilience in Thiès, a Senegalese city highly vulnerable due to rapid urbanisation, population growth, and the impacts of climate change. Frequent and increasingly severe floods disrupt local livelihoods and expose weaknesses in existing infrastructure.
This initiative integrates Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) principles into flood management, emphasising sustainable and resilient approaches that leverage local ecosystem services. The expected outcomes will be achieved by incorporating EbA strategies into urban planning and strengthening the technical capacities of local authorities and communities. Special attention will be given to training and raising awareness, particularly among women involved in urban agriculture and natural resource management.
Additionally, the project will facilitate knowledge-sharing among local stakeholders, national planning institutions, and researchers to encourage the broader adoption of nature-based solutions.
In the long run, this initiative aims to transform urban flood management in Senegal by shifting from gray infrastructure to ecosystem-based solutions, thereby enhancing the adaptive capacities of communities while improving the region’s social, environmental, and economic resilience.
