The 10-12 June three-day Nature, Climate and Gender symposium reaffirmed that lasting climate solutions must be grounded in justice, Indigenous leadership, gender equality, and locally led action.

Across the sessions, participants highlighted the central role of Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge, intergenerational equity, and inclusive governance in delivering effective Nature-based Solutions. The launch of PODONG marked a significant step toward recognising and elevating Indigenous leadership in biodiversity and climate action, while discussions on scaling impact underscored the need to better align finance, policy, and social inclusion.

The symposium was organised by IUCN’s NAbSA, Global EbA Fund, and PODONG Indigenous Peoples Initiative teams with the generous support of Global Affairs Canada, the German Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) and the International Climate Initiative (IKI), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

Enabling a paradigm shift towards EbA to build Siphandone Wetland community resilience to climate change impacts, Lao PDR

Completed in December 2024, this project supported a paradigm shift toward EbA in Lao PDR by strengthening climate resilience in the flood- and drought-prone Siphandone Wetland through locally led, NbS. Implemented by WWF-Laos, it delivered a Multi-Sectoral EbA Action Plan and strengthened institutional capacity to embed EbA across agriculture, forestry, water, and urban planning at sub-national and national levels. Mainstreaming Ecosystem-based Adaptation into Public Policy and the territorial plans of Andean communities in Cusco, Peru

Completed in December 2024, this project mainstreamed EbA into public policy and territorial planning in Cusco, Peru, by integrating biodiversity conservation and Indigenous knowledge into regional climate governance. Implemented by Asociación para la Conservación de la Cuenca Amazónica, and working with Andean communities and authorities, it strengthened institutional capacity and delivered community-led wetland restoration, revitalising traditional knowledge while improving water security and ecosystem resilience. Emphasising Ecosystems, Elevating People (3EP): Planning for “Rivers and People” in the Nairobi River Regeneration Initiative (NRRI)

Completed in January 2025, this project applied EbA to regenerate Nairobi’s river system by combining participatory planning, community leadership, and nature-based solutions in vulnerable urban settlements. Led by KDI in partnership with ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center and UN Habitat, it strengthened community–government collaboration, delivered catalytic riverfront interventions, and generated lasting knowledge to inform inclusive, climate-resilient river regeneration in Nairobi and beyond. Nature-Based Cities: Biodiversity and Climate Resilience on Urban Development

Completed in January 2025, this project, implemented by ICLEI, supported the city of Belém, Brazil, to embed NbS into urban development and climate planning, strengthening biodiversity conservation and climate resilience ahead of COP30. Through technical assistance, capacity building, and investment-ready NbS projects, it enhanced participatory governance, evidence-based decision-making, and the city’s access to green finance and global partnerships. Supporting Adaptation through Productive Landscape Restoration: From Farmers to Policies Implemented by Rainforest Alliance

Completed in June 2025, and implemented by the Rainforest Alliance, this project supported farmers and local authorities in Guatemala to apply Productive Landscape Restoration as an EbA approach, linking on-the-ground practices with municipal planning and policy processes. By translating producer experience into endorsed guidelines, capacity building, and policy engagement, it helped scale climate-resilient, deforestation-free livelihoods from farms to departmental and national levels.
