International Women's Day Special Issue

Dear Global EbA Fund Community,

This International Women’s Day, the Global EbA Fund celebrates projects that put women at the heart of climate resilience. Across its portfolio, gender-inclusive Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) initiatives are strengthening women’s leadership, embedding their knowledge into local planning, and addressing gender-specific climate vulnerabilities. From supporting community-led decision-making and participatory risk assessments to creating safe spaces for women to influence policy, these projects show how empowering women drives more effective, equitable, and locally grounded solutions for people and nature alike. We invite you to read the blog post we have released on this occasion, and to check out our latest news and upcoming events.

The Global EbA Fund is also supporting efforts to advance gender-transformative climate policy through the project EbA Policy Mechanisms for Gender Transformative Action: Fostering Women’s Capacities in Dryland Regions, implemented by the Centre for Development and Environment (University of Bern), the Kaschak Institute, and the FAO WeCaN network. The initiative strengthens women’s leadership, negotiation, and advocacy skills so they can meaningfully participate in global environmental governance processes under the UNFCCC, CBD, and UNCCD.

In 2025, a six-module virtual training programme on EbA, gender-responsive policy frameworks, and UN climate negotiations engaged 40–50 WeCaN members per session, followed by mentorship support for three participants who attended COP30 in Belém. Their engagement contributed to a landmark outcome in the gender and climate negotiations, where nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based adaptation were included in the decision text for the first time, alongside recognition of women environmental defenders and care work—demonstrating how building women’s capacities can translate into tangible policy influence at the global level.
