Nature-Based City: Biodiversity and Climate Resilience on Urban Development
Project Information
The project Nature-Based City: Biodiversity and Climate Resilience on Urban Development seeks to promote biodiversity conservation and climate action agendas in local policies in the city of Belém, located in the Amazon Rainforest and one of the most important capital cities of Brazil, nominated to host the world’s Climate Conference, COP30 in 2025.
The project will provide technical support from ICLEI South America to enhance city access to green funding, tools to develop participatory governance and evidence-based planning, such as ecosystem services and climate change risk and vulnerability assessments.
NBCity will also carry out city-to-city cooperation with Biodiversity leader cities in Colombia to scale-up positive impacts. In addition, the project will link to other initiatives to support planning an implementation with an EbA approach involving strategic partners.
Project Status
A workshop was held on December 6th and 7th, 2023 in the city of Belém, with the main objective of increasing the social participation in the process of mapping and collecting data, diagnosing ecosystem services and undertaking a risk & vulnerabilities assessment to climate change. The next step will involve the analysis of the information collected and the development of a final document, with the main issues identified along with recommendations.
Additionally, the Training on Integration of Ecosystem Services in planning, management and strategic communication processes in the territorial context with a focus on Protected Areas and other local conservation measures started on November 2023 and is expected to be completed until February 2024.
Lastly, Belém participated in 3 main events related to the global development agenda: ICLEI Colombia National Meeting, Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW) 2023 and COP28. They were important spaces for Belém to share its progress regarding the development of actions that protect biodiversity and mitigate climate change effects. Belém further projected itself towards COP30, taking these events as opportunities to learn from the experiences of other local governments in the Pan-Amazonian region and beyond.
